Moonta Mines Railway opening day

My late father 'Pop' and myself at the official opening of Moonta Mines Railway on the 25th Oct 1982.

'Pop' was the conductor and ticket seller, and a great favourite with the visitors.

The little flat 4 wheel ammunition trucks were purchased for $40au each from the ex ammunition factory at Smithfield, S.A in 1981, there were 24" gauge, and were built in 1940's they carried bombs and shells from the factory where they were made, to storage magazines at Smithfield, some miles away for safety.

Moonta Mines Railway

Moonta Mines Railway, 3 1/2 miles long. It was laid by 16 unemployed people.

I was the designer.

The train is heading for the tunnel through Ryans tailing heap.

You can see the addition of the roofs on the carriages, much appreciated in the hot sun.
